Major gas leak in Longueuil, Taschereau Boulevard closed

Due to a major gas leak, Taschereau Boulevard in Longueuil had to be closed on Sunday morning. Almost 20,000 people in the area are without electricity.

At around 9:15 a.m., the Longueuil agglomeration police were informed of a possible gas leak near Taschereau Boulevard, on Chemin du Coteau-Rouge.

As a preventive measure, the artery between Boulevard Curé-Poirier and the access to the Jacques-Cartier Bridge was closed to traffic.

Various teams were deployed on site to determine the as yet unknown source of the leak.

“We cannot say at this point how long the operation will last,” said police spokesman François Boucher.

By 11:15 a.m., nearly 20,000 customers were without power, especially in the Old Longueuil district. The action could lead to further power outages, Boucher warned.

Although the other ramps of the Jacques Cartier Bridge remain accessible, police are asking the public to avoid the area. “We have to expect traffic disruptions,” said François Boucher.
