Unaccredited training consultant risks 6 months in prison in Nigeria – CMD

Ms. Modinat Olusoji, The acting Director General (DG) of the CMD disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

Olusoji added that an unaccredited company conducting leadership development training could also be fined one million naira.

She said the centre's recently amended founding law contains provisions on sanctions and empowers the body to enforce the law.

NAN reports that CMD and the Nigerian Council for Management Development (NCMD) were established in 1973 to regulate management consultant education through the accreditation and registration of management trainers, training companies and institutions.

The Establishment Act 1973 was amended in 2022 to, among other things, give bodies statutory powers to sanction non-accredited trainers and firms.

Olusoji said the Centre had taken appropriate measures to implement the amended law to sanction unaccredited management training centres in the country.

She said the centre is also conducting a campaign to raise awareness among stakeholders about the development.

“We use every form of advocacy and use our accredited trainers to act as our ambassadors wherever they go.

“We are also trying to take some other measures to ensure that those who do not have accreditation get one, because we do not want to simply impose sanctions.

“We want to inform them about the consequences so that they can get accredited voluntarily.,” she said.

Olusoji added: “We have also informed Nigerians that they should only contact accredited trainers and business consultants.

“If you want to know whether a company is accredited or not, just ask for the accreditation number or name, go to our website and do a check.”

The Director-General stressed the need for standardisation of management training and called on stakeholders to work together to create a better environment to ensure that investments in the sector produce satisfactory results.

She said the centre's mission would be driven by the need for human capacity development and the provision of management training, research, consultancy and education services to enhance performance and increase productivity in all sectors of the economy.
