Officer involved in the arrest of Scottie Scheffler allegedly stole thousands of dollars from the suspect

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE/Gray News) – The officer who allegedly did not turn on his body camera when arresting professional golfer Scottie Scheffler has been arrested after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from a suspect.

Louisville Metro Police Officer Javar Downs searched a man during a traffic stop shortly after midnight Wednesday and confiscated an envelope containing approximately $10,000 in cash.

The man stated that Downs took about $4,000 of that cash and submitted the rest to the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections for evidence.

According to an arrest warrant, Downs was arrested at the LMDC on charges of theft and abuse of office.

Downs is charged with theft by unauthorized receipt of over $1,000 and abuse of office.

Louisville Police Chief Humphrey temporarily suspended Downs, limited his police powers, and initiated proceedings to terminate his employment.

In May, Downs was the officer who arrested Scheffler on the morning of the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, reckless driving, third-degree criminal damage to property and failure to obey traffic signals from a traffic controller.

All charges were dropped.
