Cardiff player injured by falling advertising umbrella one day after ball boy incident

SWANSEA, Wales – A Cardiff player suffered a cut to his leg when an advertising umbrella fell on him under pressure from fans as the team celebrated a goal in the Welsh derby at Swansea in English soccer's second division on Sunday.

The incident came a day after two West Ham players were forced to pull a ball boy out from under a collapsed advertising screen during a goal celebration at a Premier League match at Crystal Palace. Cardiff assistant manager Omer Riza then questioned whether there would be sufficient security at Sunday's match.

Ollie Tanner had to receive treatment for a cut on his leg after assisting on the equaliser in a 1-1 draw, but he was injured during the celebrations that followed when Cardiff fans ran towards the players behind the goal and the advertising umbrellas collapsed.

“You look around and say, 'Maybe there should be more security around the field?' So that fans can't get to the advertising signs,” Riza said. “That's a heavy sign that fell down and Ollie has a big cut on his leg. … He's OK, he kept going and kept going, but he had to leave the field for 30 seconds and that could have hurt us in that time.”

Swansea manager Luke Williams said that following the weekend's events, every team must review their safety measures around the pitch.

“It's something that security officials at all clubs need to look into, as there was an incident at the West Ham game,” said Williams. “So I expect the authorities and security officials will now respond to that and then decide what is best.”
