Countdown: Marshall | In case you missed it

Marshall's Jason Hammett has two years of experience as an assistant athletic director and assistant coach and knows the situation well. He knows what is expected now that he is leading the program.

“You know, it's been great. Marshall is a great place. I've been here for two years, but in a different role, and I get a chance to step into that role. It's a responsibility that you have to take very, very, very seriously. You know, the pride that exists here in Marshall is something that I think about every day when I wake up. And I want these kids to think about what it means to play for the Marshall Mavericks.”

Taking on a different role – or in this case, a different headgear – can present some challenges, but Hammett says the changing responsibilities have never really come as a surprise.

Hammett: “We have some really great kids, and I knew how great they were when I got the job. Really great administration, really great community. As far as surprises, you know, there aren't really any surprises out here. You know what it's like here every day. You better be prepared to work as a kid or a coach or whoever.”

The Mavs got a taste of postseason success with a win in the first round of the playoffs last season, but Hammett says they're aiming higher because they haven't accomplished anything.

Hammett: “I've asked these guys this question many times and they always come back to the same thing we did. We had a chance last year in the second round against Midlothian Heritage. And we had a lead in the third quarter. We blew it. So next year we want to be in that position again and not let the lead slip away, that's our goal.”
