Coroner: Monroe County woman killed in traffic accident on Route 33

A woman was killed Saturday evening in an apparent wrong-way driving accident involving two cars on Route 33 in Monroe County.

The fatal collision occurred around 6:30 p.m. in Hamilton Township, north of the Northampton County border, state police in Stroudsburg said.

According to police:

A woman was driving her car in the left lane heading south. An SUV driver tried to avoid a collision with the car, but was unable to prevent the collision. The car landed on the median barrier and the SUV ended up on its roof on the shoulder.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and the occupants of the SUV were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono. Police did not know the severity of their injuries.

Coroner Thomas Yanac said he would not release the name of the woman, who lived in Hamilton Township, until he could notify her immediate family. He said the investigation was continuing.

The police also did not release the names of those involved in the accident.
