Cancelled Crash Bandicoot sequel to include Spyro the Dragon

Gaming icons Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot have met before, but their biggest adventure to date was supposed to be in the now cancelled Crash Bandicoot 5as video game historian Liam Robertson revealed.

In a new, in-depth video investigation, Robertson (via DidYouKnowGaming on YouTube) has revealed extensive plans for Crash 5which is a continuation of the excellent Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. According to reports, planning for a sequel began immediately after this release, with developer Toys for Bob and publisher Activision having high hopes for the game's sales success.

According to reports, several ideas for a possible sequel were being worked out. Toys for Bob wanted to use themes from Twin Spirit by the Academy of Evil, led by the evil mask Uka Uka. Crash also reportedly wanted him to do some kind of mind exploration in the style of Psychonauts.

Perhaps the most exciting idea for fans who Crash Bandicoot and other PlayStation icons, was for Crash 5 to show Spyro the dragon. According to various developers who spoke with Robertson for this deep-dive video, Uka Uka would have used his powers to open a portal to the Dragon Kingdom and cause chaos.

Of course, this would have resulted in Spyro accompanying Crash on his adventure as the two worked together to restore peace across multiple dimensions.

Toys for Bob considered how Spyro and Crash would interact, and reportedly experimented with collectibles (dragon feathers) and other mechanics that would change the traditional Crash Bandicoot style of play.

Why was Crash 5 cancelled?

According to Robertson, these ideas were stopped in the pre-production phase, and Activision reportedly canceled the project due to lower than expected sales for Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About TimeAnd this despite the fact that the game has reportedly sold up to 5 million copies since its release.

The first sales forecasts were low and the game remained behind the extremely successful Crash Bandicoot N. Sane TrilogyDespite later successes, the damage seems to have been done – and Toys for Bob’s ambitions for Crash 5 were cut off before they could bloom.

Instead, Toys for Bob focused on working on live service games, Crash Team RumbleWithin a year of its release, the game stopped receiving new updates and Toys for Bob announced its separation from Activision and renewed independence.
