According to preliminary information, a man was killed at the Harrison House homeless shelter in northwest Berkeley on Sunday; the police investigation is ongoing.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Berkeley Police received the first reports of a shooting at the Harrison House (711 Harrison Street) that was believed to have stemmed from an argument or disturbance.

According to initial information, the shooter then fled the scene.

When officers arrived, they found a man in the building with numerous gunshot wounds.

Officials reacted quickly and set up a cordon around the building.

According to the emergency room, the man stopped breathing at times and no longer had a pulse.

Berkeley police performed a chest compression and attempted CPR, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

As of about 6:00 p.m., police were still interviewing people in the area and trying to find another place for Harrison House residents to stay on Sunday night.

Sunday's shooting was Berkeley's fourth homicide this year.

Three of the murders, all of which were shootings, have occurred since July.

On March 17, 23-year-old Gabriella Riemer stabbed her 60-year-old mother, Heather Riemer, to death in their University Avenue apartment, according to police.

According to police, Steve Addison killed Matthew Gullette on July 3 outside a rehabilitation center in South Berkeley on Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

On August 16, 52-year-old Corey Dushawn Waters of Oakland was killed in a shooting in the 3200 block of Adeline Street, according to police. No arrests were reported.

Earlier this year, a man who worked at Harrison House was shot but survived.
