Patriots' expected starting quarterback suffers shoulder injury

It wasn't his fault, but Jacoby Brissett's night didn't go as planned.

The veteran quarterback played one series in the Patriots' final preseason game before injuring his right shoulder in a game against the Washington Commanders.

Brissett's first drive looked promising after quarterback Antonio Gibson hit for a 13-yard play on third-and-5. After Gibson scored another first down on the ground, the Patriots were at the halfway line. But that's where things went wrong.

At 12:30 in the first quarter, Commanders defensive lineman KJ Henry was blocked when guard Sidy Sow ran into guard Layden Robinson and delivered a devastating sack to Brissett. The veteran quarterback looked shaken as he landed hard on his shoulders. Brissett landed on his left shoulder, but Henry landed on the quarterback's right shoulder.

Brissett threw two passes on the next two snaps and had a nice long pass on third down, but it was incomplete as KJ Osborn failed to reach the ball with both hands.

Brissett appeared to be in pain, and on the next offensive series, the Patriots decided to leave him on the bench and bring in rookie Drake Maye. The veteran quarterback completed 2 of 4 passes for 19 yards that night.

The Patriots later declared Brissett's return “questionable” due to a right shoulder injury.

Brissett played in five offensive platoons this preseason. His group scored zero points.

The shoulder injury is one to keep an eye on, as the Patriots were expected to use the veteran quarterback in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
