Investigations launched after discovery of fatal car crash in Kansas

NEWTON, Kansas (KCTV) – An investigation has been launched after the scene of a fatal car crash was found in south-central Kansas over the weekend.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said the discovery of the scene of a fatal crash at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, has led to an ongoing death investigation with the Harvey County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The sheriff's office said it received a call from a property owner who found a red 2011 Chevrolet Silverado after it crashed into a field near the Highway 50 – I-135 interchange south of Newton. The male driver was found dead inside the vehicle.

Investigators determined the driver failed to negotiate a curve, left the intersection and struck a tree. Positive identification of the driver has yet to be made, but the registered owner of the truck is Jonathan Clayton, 42, of Peabody.

Law enforcement officials said an autopsy has been scheduled as the investigation remains ongoing.
