Edgerton teenager killed in nighttime car crash in Michigan

According to Michigan State Police, the 17-year-old was driving a pickup truck in Camden, Michigan, when he lost control of the vehicle.

EDGERTON, Ohio — A 17-year-old from Edgerton, Ohio, was killed and a 16-year-old was seriously injured in an accident in Michigan early Sunday morning, according to Michigan State Police.

The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on North Main Street in Camden, Michigan, in western Hillsdale County near the Indiana and Ohio border.

Edgerton Superintendent Ben Wilhelm confirmed the teenager's name as junior Levi Hess, who played football, baseball and wrestling for the school.

According to MSP, Hess was driving a pickup truck with a 16-year-old passenger when he lost control of his vehicle.

According to police, the truck left the road and crashed into two vehicles parked in a driveway.

Hess was taken to Hillsdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The passenger was flown to an Ann Arbor hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. MSP did not release their identities.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Michigan State Police at 517-780-4580.

The school released a statement about the accident on Sunday:

It is with deep sadness that we learned the tragic news of the death of Levi Hess, an Edgerton High School student who was killed in a car accident over the weekend.

His loss is deeply mourned by the entire school community and our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and all who knew him.

In response to this heartbreaking event, trained support staff are available in the school building for students who wish to speak with a counselor. We encourage anyone who needs support to reach out and utilize these resources.

We understand that this is a difficult time for our entire school community and we are committed to providing the support necessary to help each other through this time of grief.
