Police rule out harassment and blame alcohol overdose for death of TISS student

The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.

Police have ruled out harassment as the cause of death of a student at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai who was found dead in his apartment.

Student Anurag Jaiswal was found unconscious in his rented apartment on Saturday morning. His roommates took him to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Mr. Jaiswal was pursuing a course in human resource management and had gone to a party in Vashi area with his friends on Friday evening.

There, he reportedly drank large amounts of alcohol and returned home sick early Saturday morning. When his roommates tried to wake him up, they found him unconscious.

Police, who questioned nearly 130 people who attended the party with Mr Jaiswal, now believe an alcohol overdose was the likely cause of death.

The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.

Police are waiting for his family to arrive in Mumbai from Lucknow before sending the body for autopsy.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences has released a condolence message on the student's death.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the demise of Anurag Jaiswal, a first year student in HRM&LR at TISS Mumbai. Our condolences are with Anurag's family during this heartbreaking time and our thoughts and prayers will always be with Anurag's family,” the institute said in a post on X.

The police have registered an accidental death.
