Deal: No jail time for Havasu teacher accused of having sex with runaway | Local news

Another charge of sexual abuse with a minor and a false imprisonment charge will be dropped if Judge Lee Jantzen of Mohave County Superior Court approves the deal during a sentencing hearing on Sept. 20. Judge Jantzen told attorneys he wants to read the probation department's pre-sentence report to learn more about the case before deciding on the deal.

Rogers, who was released on bail, appeared at the hearing with her defense attorney, Bob Heieck. She was ordered to report to the probation department after making her guilty plea.

Mohave County Assistant Prosecutor Marcie Mininberg had previously told the court that the former Telesis Preparatory Academy teacher abused her position of trust to form an illicit relationship with the boy, who was a freshman when they first met. Mininberg said Rogers later reconnected with the boy after learning of his difficult home life when he ran away in February at age 17.

Lake Havasu City police claimed Rogers repeatedly denied knowing where he was when asked about the boy. The teen was seen leaving her home in the 1400 block of Beefeater Drive when police arrived to contact Rogers again on July 18.

Judge Jantzen must place the defendant on probation if he approves the deal next month. He could still sentence her to up to a year in prison and place her on a sex offender registration protocol.
