Final Fantasy XVI director says future Final Fantasy titles may launch on PC at the same time as consoles

The release date for the PC version of Final Fantasy XVI has finally been confirmed for September 17, 2024 after a long wait by players. The PC port will be released alongside the two DLCs The Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide, which were previously released on PS5.

The fact that Final Fantasy XVI is coming to PC after a long period of PS5 exclusivity, which is no surprise to gamers considering the precedent set by previous Square Enix titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake. The director of Final Fantasy XVI unexpectedly shared some exciting news for PC gamers, saying that it is “highly likely” that future Final Fantasy titles will release on PC from day one.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Hiroshi Takai, the director of Final Fantasy XVIwas asked if future Final Fantasy titles could be released on PC and other platforms on the same day. He replied, “I think that's possible – probably even likely,” but quickly added, “That said, the team in charge of each project can set their own guidelines, so that's just my personal opinion.”

Last year, Square Enix was very open about changing its corporate policy. Earlier this year, Square Enix announced that it would “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox and PCs,” and mentioned that its future titles would no longer be exclusive to a specific platform. Instead, it wanted to “create an environment where more customers can enjoy their works.”

Square Enix seems to be implementing this strategy, starting with Final Fantasy 16 and also with future titles. If Final Fantasy XVI has achieved extraordinary success on the PC platform, it is very likely that future Final Fantasy titles will be released for the PC at the same time as other platforms.
