Man charged in May prison smuggling case | News

A man arrested Saturday following unrest in Dededo faces additional charges related to a May prison stay, according to a complaint filed in Supreme Court by a justice of the peace.

Martili Akwio Teliu, 24, was charged Monday with promoting prison contraband as a second-degree felony and two counts of assault as a misdemeanor.

On May 25, Teliu was arrested at the Department of Corrections when an officer found a 5-inch makeshift weapon under his pillow. The complaint states the weapon was confiscated and turned over to the Guam Police Department.

At 7:35 p.m. on Saturday, a woman in Mangilao called the police because “someone who frequently roamed the streets with a machete came to her house and started shouting incomprehensible things.”

She and a family member were outside at the time and Teliu reportedly threw a machete at her family member. The weapon hit a gate and she and the family member ran into the house.

They said they observed Teliu “pacing back and forth in front of their house, dragging the machete along the metal gate for several minutes before walking away.”

Teliu has previous convictions for criminal damage, graffiti and trespassing, and was arrested earlier this year on charges of burglary, trespassing and resisting arrest, court records show.

If he is found guilty in the current trial, he faces 12 years in prison.

He was detained on $3,000 bail.
