Passerby shot and killed while attempting to settle a dispute in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — According to police, an innocent bystander was shot in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia while trying to break up an argument that escalated into gunfire.

Investigators said they observed the incident on video from a city surveillance camera and saw the woman get caught between two people fighting and then shot.

“It appears that the person struck by the gunfire was an unintended target attempting to break up or intervene in a fight between the shooter and another person. This person was apparently the person the shooter intended to shoot,” said Philadelphia Police Lt. DF Pace.

According to police, the shooting occurred shortly after midnight in front of a supermarket in the 2500 block of Kensington Avenue, not far from A Street.

Action News learned that several people were outside the store and that an argument broke out at some point. According to investigators, the victim, believed to be in his late 30s, attempted to break up the fight but was fatally shot.

Homicide investigators are currently reviewing additional surveillance footage in their search for the shooter.

The identity of the victim has not yet been disclosed.
