Man in Oakland found guilty of triple murder and two attempted murders

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA – A 31-year-old man has been convicted of killing three people, attempting to murder two others and other crimes in Oakland since 2009, Alameda County prosecutors said.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday that it had obtained guilty verdicts for Joseph Carroll on two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, one count of assault with a firearm and one count of shooting at an occupied vehicle.

“The guilty verdicts also include the repeal of the six-gun law. The jury found the defendant not guilty on count 11, the attempted murder of Aaron Shaw. If convicted on all counts, Mr. Carroll could face a prison sentence of over 200 years,” prosecutors said.

During the trial, prosecutors said Carroll murdered Nguyen Ngo in a drive-by shooting in Oakland on April 23, 2009. He also tried to kill Nguyen's brother, Bao Ngo, who was injured in the shooting.

According to prosecutors, Carroll attempted to murder a man named Deandre Ware on May 3, 2010. On June 11, 2010, Carroll shot Nehemiah Lewis as the victim got out of his car in Oakland.

Based on evidence and witness testimony, Carroll murdered Andrew Henderson Jr. in another drive-by shooting in Oakland on April 13, 2011.

District Attorney Pamela Price said the victory in this “hard-fought case meant so much to the victims, their families and our community.”

“The level and scope of the violence described in this trial was outrageous and completely unacceptable in our county. Our office is committed to justice and I am proud of the hard work and dedication of the trial team,” she said in a statement. “Despite intimidation and disrespectful behavior, they remained focused on the ultimate goal of achieving a conviction.”
