Apparent murder-suicide on Long Island leaves 5 dead in Syosset: What we know

Five people were found dead in a house in Syosset, Long Island. Police are currently investigating a suspected murder-suicide.

Nassau County police responded to shots fired at a home on Wyoming Court around noon Sunday.

There, police found a man on the front lawn who appeared to have inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Four other victims were found inside the house. Police were unable to identify any of them, but neighbors believe they all belonged to the same family.

A couple from the neighborhood told FOX 5 NY Kendall Green, the man behind the shooting, was in his 60s and recently lost his mother, who was in her 90s. They said the two had lived in the neighborhood for years and her death hit him very hard. They said he was distraught, but of course they didn't think it would come to this.

“I would never have thought that. He would take his whole family and siblings with him. I thought maybe he was desperate and just did this to himself. I really would never have thought that,” said the neighbor.

Investigators were in the neighborhood for most of the day and into Sunday evening. Those who knew the gunman said he had several disturbing seizures before the shooting and feared the worst when they heard screams coming from the house.

“It's really heartbreaking. This is such a quiet little neighborhood that they used to be called bedroom communities. It's shocking,” said another neighbor.

Police did not disclose the age of the victims or a possible motive for the shooting.
