Clinic needs community help, PSP hosts job fair and more ⋆ The Palm Springs Post

Happy Monday everyone, where we want to talk about politics and, more importantly, how we cover it: We don't try! Reporters and politicians have long engaged in a strange dance: Politicians use the media to win favor with voters, and reporters use politicians to land stories that boost their egos. It's exhausting! We have no interest in playing that game, and thanks to our polling, we know most of you feel the same way. And since we're now officially in election season, here's our promise: You won't find local political ads, opinions, letters to the editor, or endorsements in the Post. You'll find only the essentials – who and what's on your local ballot, when you can vote, how to cast your vote, and who won. If there is actual news about a candidate, we'll report on it. That said, we won't get into detail or into the mud, as that will only appeal to a small group of people.

Clinic faces financing crisis and seeks support

A Palm Springs-based nonprofit clinic — the first in the county to offer free STI testing and treatment — is struggling with significant financial challenges.

The headlines determine: Founder Dr. Phyllis Ritchie said Wednesday that she and PS Test staff remain committed to providing accessible health services, even though county funding was lost much sooner than expected.

Zoom in: To counteract this shortage, the clinic has introduced reduced opening hours over the summer and is now open Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to maintain service while adapting to a reduced budget.

  • Dr. Ritchie and her husband have begun to maintain the clinic operations using their own resources.

Why it is important: PS Test, which The Post reported on here in 2021, supports vulnerable populations facing barriers to health care, including homelessness, lack of transportation and lack of insurance.

  • The clinic's 100% free STI testing and treatment services are unique in Riverside County.

What’s next: PS Test is actively seeking new funding opportunities and asking the community for support to ensure the continuity of its important services.

Donations are accepted through the clinic’s website or in person at the facility (140 North Luring Dr., Suite D) during regular hours.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST…

Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is preparing for its 4th annual job fair, offering approximately 200 positions ahead of the busy tourism season in the Coachella Valley.

The headlines determine: The event, scheduled to take place on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the city's convention center (277 N. Avenida Caballeros), will offer job seekers the opportunity to meet potential employers and explore various career opportunities in the aviation and hospitality industries.

Zoom in: PSP and its partner organizations need to fill numerous positions in a variety of industries, including airlines, car rental companies, restaurants, retail and federal agencies.

  • Interviews and immediate hires are available for positions such as customer service representatives, ramp agents, and sales representatives.

Why it is important: The event comes as the airport prepares for increased activity during the valley's peak season and offers job seekers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the exciting working environment of an airport.

Pro tip: Job seekers are advised to bring multiple copies of their resume and arrive early to maximize their chances of receiving preferred career opportunities.
