Deputy Warden of Attur Prison in Salem suspended

The deputy superintendent of Attur District Jail in Salem has been suspended for allegedly selling food items intended for inmates to local shops.

The Attur District Jail, located in the premises of Attur Taluk Office, houses over 50 inmates. Food for preparing meals is procured from the Cooperative Department. However, there have been allegations that jail officials are selling these food items to shops and that the quality of food provided to the inmates is substandard.

In response to these allegations, Salem Central Prison Superintendent (in-charge) G. Vinoth, along with anti-corruption officials, initiated an investigation into the Attur Prison staff. The investigation confirmed the allegations, with the Superintendent discovering unregistered food items during an unannounced inspection last week.

Following these findings, the Superintendent sent a memo to Deputy Jailer Vaijayanthi. The investigation report was also forwarded to the Director General of Police (Prisons). Based on the report, the DGP issued a suspension order for Deputy Jailer Vaijayanthi.
