Injury updates on Sam LaPorta and Jahmyr Gibbs: Latest news on the Detroit Lions stars

The Detroit Lions have two key offensive players whose participation is a question mark ahead of the 2024 season, as both tight end Sam LaPorta and running back Jahmyr Gibbs are battling injuries.

Gibbs and LaPorta are dealing with a hamstring injury they sustained at some point in practice. Last week, head coach Dan Campbell announced positive news on both of them, saying he expects them to return to practice this week.

“We're hoping to get a lot of players back the day after the Pittsburgh game,” Campbell said, according to Erik Schlitt of the Pride of Detroit. “We're targeting Skip (Dan Skipper), (Kevin) Zeitler, (Sam) LaPorta, (Jahmyr) Gibbs, Rodrigo (Malcolm Rodriguez) and I think we might start (DJ) Reader as well. We'll start using him in one-on-one games. So we're hoping to get a whole group of players back on Sunday.”

On Monday, head coach Dan Campbell gave another positive update on both players.

Latest information on Sam LaPorta and Jahmyr Gibbs' injuries

According to Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News, LaPorta and Gibbs returned to practice on Sunday, putting both on track to play in Week 1.

LaPorta and Gibbs had sensational rookie seasons in which both players reached the Pro Bowl. They will continue to be important members of what is arguably one of the best offenses in the NFL in 2024.

LaPorta recorded 86 pass catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023. He was rated as the TE1 overall in PPR and his catches, yards and touchdowns ranked first, fourth and tied for first among rookie tight ends in league history.

Meanwhile, despite missing two games, Gibbs posted 1,261 yards (945 rushing) from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns and is expected to play a larger role in 2024, particularly as a pass catcher.
