OVI, charges filed for child endangerment after accident

A female driver who allegedly hit a mailbox on Saturday, August 24, at around 11 p.m. and fled the scene of the accident was arrested a short time later for driving under the influence of alcohol and endangering a child.

Lindsey Smith, 28, of Springfield, was also charged with failure to maintain control after her silver 2007 Honda Accord, traveling northbound, veered left-off center and struck a mailbox in the area of ​​the 5800 block of U.S. Route 68 in Liberty Township. Smith was unable to stop after the crash and continued driving north toward the city limits, according to Logan County Sheriff's Office officials.

A witness reported the accident and Bellefontaine Police officers were dispatched to the south side of town to identify the vehicle. Officers observed a silver Accord with no working headlights and significant front end damage traveling north in that area. A traffic stop was initiated in the area of ​​1212 South Main Street.

When officers made contact with the driver, Smith, signs of intoxication were observed. A pack of Mike's Hard Lemonade was discovered on the passenger side floor. She also admitted to officers that she had drunk Fireball shots before driving. According to officers, a one-year-old child was also in the vehicle.

Tests to determine alcohol dependency were unsuccessful and Smith was taken into custody and taken to the police station where she took a breathalyzer test which showed a blood alcohol content of 0.181 per mille.

She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and endangering a child and was booked into the Logan County Jail.
