Drunk driving charges after UTV crash leaves student dead

A man has been charged with drunken driving in connection with the UTV crash that killed a 16-year-old student in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, according to bond court statements. The coroner said Ethan Harrell, 16, of Inman, died in the hospital at 1:40 a.m. Monday. Police said Harrell was the passenger in a UTV that crashed on Hardin Road Sunday night. Police said the Polaris UTV was traveling north on Hardin Road when it left the road and overturned. Harrell was airlifted to the hospital and died Monday morning, cops said. Randall Bell, 40, appeared in bond court Monday afternoon. He is charged with drunken driving causing serious bodily harm, endangering a child, having an open container in a vehicle and drunken driving causing death, according to the detention center's website. Bell's address is listed as Hardin Road, where the accident occurred. Harrell was an 11th grader at Boiling Springs High School. He played first base and was also a pitcher on the baseball team. The Second Spartanburg County School District released the following statement: “This morning we were notified that one of our beloved students has passed away.” Ethan Harrell was an 11th grader at Boiling Springs High School. At BSHS, Ethan brought so many smiles to the faces of his classmates, teammates, teachers and coaches. Among the thousands of students at BSHS, Ethan stood out for all the right reasons. He will be missed by all of us. “He was a great teammate, classmate and all around great person. He was always positive, well mannered and was loved and respected by his classmates as well as the faculty and staff at BSHS. He left a lasting impression on his coaches and teachers,” said BSHS Principal Zack McQuigg. “I never heard anyone say a negative word about Ethan, and he always represented his family and school community in a positive way. He will be greatly missed.' “Ethan played 1st base and was also a pitcher on the baseball team. 'He had a great sense of humor and loved to talk about trucks, engines and hunting,' said head coach Jeff Lipscomb. 'Ethan was a great team player that everyone liked.' “We thank all of our BSHS school counselors and members of the district office special services team who were at BSHS this morning to provide mental health support to students and staff as they mourned Ethan's loss. We will provide these resources for as long as it is needed.” Additionally, we are grateful to the member of our faith community who volunteered to be at school early this morning to comfort and reassure our students. 'Our deepest condolences go out to the Harrell family. We will keep them in our prayers during these difficult days ahead.' We ask our community to keep them and our Bulldog family in their prayers as well.”

The prison website says he is charged with drunk driving causing serious bodily harm, endangering a child, having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle and drunk driving causing death.

Bell's address is given as Hardin Road, where the accident occurred.

Harrell attended 11th grade at Boiling Springs High School. He played first base and was also a pitcher on the baseball team.
