Man allegedly groped woman in Phoenix supermarket: PD

According to Phoenix police, a man is accused of sexual assault in connection with an incident at a south Phoenix supermarket.

In court documents obtained on August 26, the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Yonny Yahir Ramirez Cortes, is accused of sexual battery stemming from an incident in which he allegedly inappropriately touched a woman in the area of 7th Avenue and Southern.

Investigators say when officers arrived, Ramirez was already detained by supermarket security. Officers later read Ramirez his Miranda Rights in Spanish, but he was unable to respond. Officers also said it was obvious that Ramirez was “very intoxicated” because “a strong odor of alcohol emanated from his person.”

The victim told police, according to court documents, that Ramirez walked past her in the supermarket and shortly after touched her in her private area. The victim then called her husband as Ramirez ran away.

Police also discovered that Ramirez had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Santa Cruz County, in addition to several warrants from the city of Phoenix for alleged drunken driving.

A judge set bail for Ramirez at $10,000 and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 4.
