Accident leads to drunk driving arrest, Porsmouth, New Hampshire

State police officers responded to a car crash on Interstate 95 North early Monday morning that left three people hospitalized.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — A Holden man is charged with driving under the influence after causing a crash on Interstate 95 in New Hampshire early Monday morning that left several people injured.

According to a press release from the New Hampshire Department of Public Safety, emergency crews responded to the reported single-vehicle crash on the northbound lane ramp of I-95 in Portsmouth at approximately 1:53 a.m.

Investigators on scene determined that a Honda Accord, driven by 40-year-old Michael Tardiff of Holden, Maine, lost control of the vehicle while cornering, causing it to veer off the left side of the driveway and eventually come to a stop after striking a tree in the wooded area near the road, the news release said.

Tardiff and two other passengers were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Their serious injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to authorities.

New Hampshire officials said Tardiff was charged with driving under the influence and reckless conduct and is scheduled to appear in court on September 11.

The northbound ramp was closed to traffic for two hours while police investigated the scene and rescue crews worked to recover the vehicle from the bushes, the release said. All lanes were reopened at around 3:41 a.m.

Members of the Portsmouth Police and Fire Service and the National Wrecker Service assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
