Attorney General's Office investigates excessive force incident between Newburgh man and police officer

The Attorney General's Office is investigating an incident between a man and a Newburgh police officer that occurred earlier this month.

Marquis Freeman is accused of threatening to attack police during a disturbance call. They claim Freeman did not obey orders to move off the street and later spat on a female police officer three times after his arrest.

The video shows the final moments of the incident, as a male officer tackles Freeman to the ground and continues to beat him while he is restrained and tasered by two other officers. An officer is then heard speaking to witnesses who question the arrest tactics used.

According to investigators, one officer has since been suspended.

Mayor Torrance Harvey said he met with the city manager and members of the city council about the incident. He also held a conference call with the Newburgh police chief.
