Video shows racist tirade from off-duty Alameda County firefighter – NBC Bay Area

A video surfaced on social media over the weekend showing an off-duty Alameda County firefighter making racially insensitive remarks in a heated exchange on a Central Valley highway, the fire chief confirmed Monday.

The driver who recorded the video told Sacramento television station KCRA that the comments came after an accident on Highway 99 in Lodi on Friday that began with an argument about who was at fault.

Finally, the driver accused the fireman of racism, which he partly rejected with swear words.

Alameda County Fire Chief William McDonald provided an update Monday on a video posted on social media showing one of the department's firefighters making racially insensitive remarks following an off-duty incident in Lodi.

The Alameda County Fire Department confirmed that the man in the video was a member of the fire department, but did not immediately share the firefighter's identity or employment status. Chief William McDonald, however, issued a statement.

“Our department is committed to gathering all facts and we are handling this situation in a manner that reflects our commitment to integrity, professionalism and community trust,” the statement said.

McDonald also said Monday that the firefighter's actions and behavior did not reflect the department's values. The firefighter has been placed on paid administrative leave while the department investigates the incident, he said.
