Doctor accused of abusing women and children appears in court via Zoom

PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) — A probation hearing was held today in Oakland County's 52nd District Court for Rochester Hills-based physician Dr. Oumair Aejaz, who is accused of abusing women and children and filming them with hidden cameras. The 40-year-old appeared via Zoom with his attorney, who expressed concerns about the way the case has been handled so far.

“Frankly, the sheriff has declared that Dr. Aejaz is guilty,” said defense attorney Mariell Lehman.

Lehman referred to statements made by Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard during last week's press conference in which he called the internist one of the worst sex offenders he had ever seen.

“A woman lies unconscious in a hospital bed and he rapes her, even a two-year-old child. They think they are having a great day at the pool and are caught naked,” said Sheriff Bouchard.

“Your Honor, the statements made by the prosecution and the sheriff's office essentially undermine Dr. Aejaz's constitutional right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” Lehman said.

Lehman asked the court to prevent the district attorney's office and the sheriff's office from making any further statements in the case. Lehman also pointed out that she was not given enough time to review the partial evidence submitted by the district attorney's office this morning, including 141 pages of documents.

“There is quite a lot of material here,” said the prosecution team.

Last week, Sheriff Bouchard said six computers, four cell phones and 15 external storage devices were seized during the arrest.

“There are 13,000 videos on a single hard drive, and the other hard drive could potentially be cloud storage as well,” said Sheriff Bouchard.

Bouchard also says the crime, which may have been going on for over six years, would not have come to light without the evidence provided by the doctor's wife.

According to court documents, Aejaz's wife filed for divorce in June. After Aejaz was charged, his wife was granted sole custody of their two minor children and sole ownership of their home.

“This level of education and everything there, why do they do this to people?” said Rochester Hills resident Linda Sadek.

Sadik's house is on the same street as Aejaz's home in Rochester Hills. The mother of two couldn't believe it when she read what had happened.

“What questions were going through your mind?” asked Faraz Javed, reporter for 7 News Detroit.

“Is he sick or not? Is he okay? The whole street is full of children,” said Sadik.

Aejaz was tried on August 13 and charged with ten serious crimes:

  • A case of child sexual abuse.
  • One count of using a computer to create and/or reproduce child sexually abusive material.
  • Two cases of nude filming/photographing children under 18 years of age.
  • Two cases of nude photography/recording of two women over 18 years of age.
  • Four counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

Aejaz moved to Michigan for his internship in 2011. He completed his residency at Detroit Sinai Grace Hospital and then moved to Dawson, Alabama. In 2018, Aejaz returned to Oakland County to continue his practice as an internist.
Bouchard believed the geographic scope of the investigation could expand beyond Genesee and Macomb counties, where the hospitals are located, and include other states or countries depending on where Aejaz worked. That's why the sheriff's office has set up a special email address for victims and anyone who wants to share information: [email protected].

The next court date is now set for September 16. Aejaz's $2 million bail and its conditions remain in place.
