Brooklyn man charged with hate crime after anti-Muslim attack on Fifth Avenue.

A Brooklyn man identified as a suspect in a violent anti-Muslim attack on Fifth Avenue earlier this month was charged with a hate crime in Manhattan on Monday.

David Grinblat is accused of spitting on a 25-year-old man in the street on August 5 as he spoke into his phone in Urdu and shouted “damn Muslim” before hitting the victim on the head and busting his lip.

Grinblat pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment at his arraignment in Manhattan Supreme Court. He also faces criminal damage charges in two pending cases in Brooklyn.

Griblat allegedly threw several punches as the victim followed him on his cellphone into the subway station on Fifth Avenue near East 53rd Street, calling him a “terrorist” and saying, “Go back to Asia,” according to charging documents. When the victim asked why he spat on him, he allegedly replied, “That's what I do. Death to Muslims.”

The victim's injuries were treated at nearby NYU Langone Health.

Grinblat is accused of fleeing the scene before police arrived. He was arrested at his South Brooklyn home on August 8, two days after the victim identified him from a photograph.

A Manhattan judge denied prosecutors' request for bail at his arraignment in criminal court, but ordered that he remain under supervision and undergo a clinical examination.

Grinblat and his public defender did not respond to the Daily News' request for comment.

“It is alleged that David Grinblat attacked a man based on his perceived religion and nationality and hurled racist, anti-Islamic language at him,” Manhattan District Attorney Bragg said in a statement.

“We will continue to hold accountable those who commit hateful acts for which there is no place in our city.”

As of mid-August, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office had prosecuted 139 hate crimes – 39 of which were anti-Semitic, 31 against Asians or Indians, 28 against LGBTQ, 15 against Hispanics or Mexicans, 10 against Muslims or Arabs, and 10 against black New Yorkers.
