San Diego County inmate dies in alleged attack on prison inmate

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — A man serving a three-year prison sentence in San Diego County for racketeering and assault was killed this weekend in an alleged attack by two fellow inmates at a Kern County jail, officials said Monday.

The alleged attack occurred Saturday at Wasco State Prison, where David Dominguez, 29, was seen being physically supported by other inmates who told prison staff he had a seizure and fell, officials said.

Medical personnel transported Dominguez by ambulance for treatment, but he died shortly after 4 p.m., the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

A review of surveillance footage revealed that inmates Jose Landeros, 27, and Michael Padilla, 37, entered Dominguez's cell and began “a physical altercation,” CDCR officials said.

Landeros and Padilla have since been placed in a probation facility pending the outcome of the investigation. Four other inmates have also been placed in probation facilities pending the investigation, but their alleged roles in Saturday's fatal incident have not been disclosed.

The official cause of Dominguez's death has not yet been determined by the county medical examiner.

Dominguez arrived at Wasco State Prison last fall and was sentenced to three years in prison for extortion by force or threat and assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury.

Landeros was sentenced to 16 years in prison in Riverside County for second-degree robbery and to three years and four months in prison in Kern County for second-degree robbery, assault with a firearm and false imprisonment by force.

Padilla was sentenced to 22 years in prison in San Bernardino County for intoxicated manslaughter.
