Ed Reed talks to another Miami football legend about his job at HBCU

Former Miami football stars Edgar James and Ed Reed sat down for a podcast episode, and Reed's brief time at an HBCU was the topic of conversation.

Reed, the Hall of Fame safety, attempted to describe his brief tenure as coach-elect at Bethune-Cookman University with his former Miami football teammate and fellow Pro Football Hall of Fame member on the “Create The Life Podcast.”

“I was supposed to be the coach – I was never the coach,” Reed said of the few weeks in late 2022/early 2023. “I never signed a contract. I was never fired like everyone said.”

Reed talked about how he planned to make his program work. He said he realized that the football culture involves “farming” – meaning some players will successfully leave the program. He said he was prepared for that and ready to prepare his players for that.

“I told the kids: If someone from Power Five comes and gets you, go! I want you to go!”

Ed Reed claims there was an agenda in the administration of the HBCU in Daytona, FL, and claims that “moles” were recruited to report to higher-ups. He also talked about the school's then-president leaving for another school and suggested they would bring down that university as well.

“They recycle bad coaches. They just put them somewhere else,” Reed said. “They recycle bad administrations and put them somewhere else and do the same thing,” Reed told Ederrgin James.

Edgerrin James' son is a running back at an HBCU. Eden James is entering his third season as a running back at Howard University. James explained how he wanted to send his son to an HBCU after the Power Five route.

“It's different – but you have to approach it with the right attitude and the right goal. Because if you don't stand by your goal and the reason why you are here, you will only find negative things. But we are determined to be an example or to be where we can improve things – but also – not to neglect ourselves.”

The two former Miami teammates talked about people wanting to invest in the school and the surrounding area during Reed's short tenure.

“I was actually looking to buy a building on campus because you were there,” James said. “I was actually looking forward to supporting the situation…”

Bethune-Cookman officials eventually withdrew their offer for Ed Reed and hired Ray Woodie Jr. as head coach.
