California is the first state to own, operate and deploy a C-130 tanker aircraft to fight wildfires. Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said the first C-130 will begin operations Monday. It is the first of seven C-130s the state is converting and deploying. The aircraft will be strategically distributed throughout the state. The planes can fly 800 miles and carry 4,000 gallons of flame retardant. The state received approval to purchase the seven aircraft from the Coast Guard in 2018. It is the first of seven C-130s that the state will convert and deploy. The aircraft will be stationed strategically throughout the state.
