NFL injury report: Latest updates on Justin Herbert, Penei Sewell and more

The NFL preseason is almost complete, which means the regular season is just around the corner. In fact, there are only a week and a half until the Chiefs and Ravens face off on the first Thursday Night Football of 2024. That's not a lot of time, and that's bad news for any player still recovering from an injury sustained in 2023 or during the preseason.

There are a whole host of high-impact players still dealing with nagging ailments that could hurt your favorite team, your fantasy team, and maybe even your opponent's fantasy team, but only if you're lucky. Here are the most notable injuries in the NFL and whether or not they'll be ready to return to action in Week 1.

  • Kyle Hamilton, S. of the Baltimore Ravens: According to Giana Han of the Baltimore Banner, Kyle Hamilton (hip) left practice on August 22 while holding his left hip. Reports have since indicated that this was nothing serious and that it should not jeopardize Hamilton's status in Week 1.

  • Baltimore Ravens TE Mark Andrews: Despite missing practice on August 19, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh told reporters that Andrews (receiver name withheld) was fine and could play in Week 1 against Kansas City.

  • Buffalo Bills WR Curtis Samuel: Bills head coach Sean McDermott was only optimistic when asked about Samuel's status (pharyngeal toe) for the Bills' Week 1 game.

  • Carolina Panthers RB Jonathon Brooks: Brooks (knee) suffered a torn ACL during last year's college football season. He is still recovering and is expected to miss the first month of the regular season.

  • Chicago Bears DB Jaquan Brisker: Despite returning to practice on a limited basis nearly a week ago, Brisker's (unspecified) injury is a big question mark for everyone not directly involved with him. He's missed a lot of time, and while it looks like he's on track to be back in the mix in Week 1, there's still a chance he could miss part of the regular season.

  • Kevin Byard of the Chicago Bears: Although he did not play in the final preseason game on Thursday, Byard's injury (soft tissue) is not serious, according to Bears head coach Matt Eberflus.

  • Cincinnati Bengals OT Amarius Mims: According to ESPN, the first-round rookie (chest) is expected to be out for several weeks.

  • Nick Chubb, running back for the Cleveland Browns: The Cleveland Browns are expected to start Chubb (knee) on the PUP list, which would have him suspended for at least the team's first four games.

  • Dallas Cowboys DB DaRon Bland: According to the Cowboys, Bland (foot) is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks due to a stress fracture.

  • Detroit Lions OT Penei Sewell: After a brief scare regarding Sewell's (ankle) availability for Week 1, Lions team reporter Justin Rogers stated that Sewell is “doing well” and should be ready for Week 1.

  • Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs: Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters that while he would like Downs (ankle) to be back for Week 1, there is no timetable for his return. A Week 1 return is still possible, but seems highly unlikely at this point.

  • Jacksonville Jaguars WR Christian Kirk: After being sidelined for an extended period with an ankle injury, Kirk returned to the Jaguars' practice on Monday and is expected to be ready for Week 1.

  • Marquise Brown, wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs: Brown (shoulder) attended Chiefs practice on Monday but did not participate. As things stand, Brown is expected to miss Week 1, with additional weeks considered possible.

  • Las Vegas Raiders TE Brock Bowers: Bowers (foot) has been battling an injury for some time, which resulted in his absence from practice on Aug. 21. However, Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce has since stated that while he is cautious with Bowers, he still expects the first-round pick to play in Week 1.

  • Los Angeles Chargers DE Joey Bosa: After missing most of the second half of 2023 with a foot injury, Bosa is still not fully fit before Week 1. However, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh expects him to be back in Week 1.

  • Justin Herbert, quarterback of the Los Angeles Chargers: According to former Chargers quarterback Dan Fouts, Herbert's foot is “no longer a problem.” Fouts claims he spoke to Herbert about his injury on August 23 and insists Herbert (plantar fasciitis) will be good to go by Week 1.

  • Los Angeles Rams WR Puka Nacua: Nacua (knee) returned to practice on Monday, raising expectations that he will be available to the team at the start of the regular season.

  • Miami Dolphins OLB Bradley Chubb: It was unclear whether Chubb (knee) would begin the 2024 season on the PUP list. Chubb has been on the list since Monday and will therefore miss the first four games of the season.

  • Miami Dolphins WR Odell Beckham Jr.: Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Monday he was not yet sure whether Beckham (player name unknown) would begin the season on the PUP list or not.

  • New England Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett: After Brissett (shoulder) was taken out of the team's final preseason game, head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters it was no big deal and that Brissett would have continued if it had been a regular season game.

  • Evan Neal, New York Giants OT: After Saturday's preseason game, Neal (ankle) appeared to be doing well, telling reporters he felt “OK.”

  • Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren: Warren (hamstring) said Monday that he expects to be ready for the season opener.

  • San Francisco 49ers OT Trent Williams: While it's not an injury, Williams appears to be holding out until his contract situation is resolved. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Williams' availability in Week 1 is officially questionable.

  • San Francisco 49ers S Talanoa Hufanga: On Sunday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that a decision has yet to be made on whether Hufanga will begin the season on the injured list.

  • Seattle Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett: Lockett (leg) has been out for some time, but the injury is not considered serious.
