Jury begins deliberations in trial against double murder suspect

GUNTERSVILLE, Alabama (WAFF) – We are one day closer to solving the fate of a Guntersville man accused of shooting two teenagers in September 2021.

Kenov Williams is charged with capital crimes in connection with the deaths of Elias Lopez and Enrique Alvardo.

Final testimony and closing arguments were completed on the fourth day of the Taco Bell murder trial.

Earlier in the day, it was Williams' turn to call witnesses to testify, and he chose two: Guntersville Deputy Police Chief John East and himself. As a reminder, Williams is represented by his own attorney in this capital murder trial.

During East's testimony, Williams questioned the former investigator about the thoroughness of his investigation. Williams faces life in prison without parole for his role in the staged robbery that led to the murder of Lopez and Alvardo.

Williams asked why no swabs were taken from any firearms found during the investigation. East replied that his office had conducted a thorough investigation.

Finally, Williams himself took the stand and stated that he had no involvement in the robbery of Lopez and that the idea was that of his co-defendant Nicholas Cuzzort, who is also charged with the capital crime.

Williams told jurors that he only met with Lopez to buy back the drugs he had stolen from Nicholas' house and that Lopez tried to rob him instead.

In their closing argument, prosecutors reminded jurors of the Snapchat conversations between Cuzzort and Williams leading up to the shooting and said it was a setup from the start.

Williams is charged with multiple capital crimes, but Judge Chris Abel also considered manslaughter because Williams was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crime.

After only a few minutes of deliberation, Judge Abel dismissed the jury for the day. It is expected to resume its deliberations at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
