Oxford man who allegedly crashed a stolen car and killed a 10-year-old boy released on bail

An Oxford man was given $100,000 bail on Monday for allegedly stealing a car and crashing it into another car outside Gillette Stadium on Saturday, killing a 10-year-old boy and seriously injuring five members of the boy's family.

Michael Escolas, 42, pleaded not guilty in Wrentham District Court to 14 charges, including multiple counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, theft of a motor vehicle and manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol, court records show. His next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 19.

A lawyer for Escolas did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Prosecutors said Sunday that Escolas stole a Jeep outside Gillette while its owners – a couple from Vermont – were attending a Kenny Chesney concert at the arena. Escolas also had a ticket to the concert, officials said.

He allegedly drove the stolen vehicle south on Route 1 toward Plainville and collided with a Nissan that was stopped at a traffic light near Interstate 495, prosecutors said.

All six occupants of the Nissan – four children and their parents – were taken to area hospitals. The 10-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. The three other children were taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence and their parents were taken to the trauma center at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with serious injuries, officials said.

Escolas was also seriously injured and taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

Three other vehicles were hit in the accident. Their occupants were not taken to hospital, the public prosecutor's office said.

A member of the child's family told reporters outside the courthouse that they “want him to be held accountable for his actions and the devastation he has caused to our family,” according to a video obtained by WHDH-TV.

β€œThis 10-year-old child is no longer with us,” added the relative, whose identity was not disclosed.

β€œIt is just devastating for our children and our family that we have lost this precious soul,” the woman said.
