Jackson County drops possible referendum on Chiefs Stadium renovation

As time goes on, the Chiefs may no longer be in Missouri.

Kansas is willing to give the Chiefs a lot of money for a new stadium across the border, but Jackson County, Missouri, is not playing along. According to Mike Hendricks of the Kansas City StarJackson County Legislator a regulation killed This would have led to a vote in November on a sales tax of a quarter cent.

The proposal failed by 5 votes to 4.

According to Hendricks, the chiefs did not support the proposal. It is unclear why they did not support it. (Perhaps they feared another defeat on Election Day.)

In April, an attempt to keep the 3/8 cent sales tax to fund renovations to Arrowhead Stadium and a new ballpark for the Royals failed at the ballot box. Now the effort, which only affects the Chiefs, doesn't even have a chance of failing.

Despite their popularity and success, many voters either don't care about football or don't want public money spent on playgrounds for multi-billionaires.

The Chiefs' lease runs through 2030. They are free to enter into a contract with Kansas sooner or later, which would take effect in 2031.
