Downing Street draws up plans to announce death of 'chief mouse hunter' Larry the cat

Downing Street officials are preparing a “media plan” to announce the death of cat Larry. The Independent understands.

Larry has become a popular Downing Street landmark and is often seen outside the door of 10 Downing Street during major political events and news broadcasts.

The 17-year-old “chief mouse hunter” is probably in his final years and has already exceeded the average life expectancy of a tabby cat.

Government sources said The times that a press release and graphics be prepared “ready for the sad day of his death.”

According to reports, selected images to be published after news of his death are stored in folders in Number 10's IT system for public information.

While one source said Larry is currently “doing well,” another said, “We felt this matter needed to be handled very sensitively.”

The cat, adopted from Battersea Cats Home, was originally brought to Downing Street by David Cameron as a pet for his children and has since outlived five Prime Ministers.

The Cabinet Office website features a biography of the beloved cat, which states: 'Larry has lived here since 15 February 2011 and is the first cat at Number 10 to hold the official title of 'Chief Mouser'.

“Larry was recruited by the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home for his mouse-catching skills. He came to live in the household at Number 10 and made a big impression.”

It continues: “He has won the hearts of the British public, with press teams often camping on his doorstep. In return, the nation sends him gifts and treats every day.

“Larry spends his days welcoming guests to the house, checking safety precautions and testing the nap quality of antique furniture.

“One of his daily tasks is to think about a solution to the mouse infestation in the house. Larry says that this is still 'in the tactical planning phase.'”
