Update on Jason Heyward after Dodgers DFA

The Los Angeles Dodgers have released Jason Heyward from the organization after he passed the waivers list, according to the team's transaction log. Heyward is now a free agent and can sign with any team.

Heyward was claimed off waivers last week after being designated for assignment as part of the Dodgers' roster move that activated Chris Taylor from the 10-day injured list.

“Very challenging,” manager Dave Roberts said of his conversation to inform Heyward of the Dodgers’ decision.

“What Jason did for the Dodgers in a year and a half was pretty remarkable; on the field, in the locker room, in the community. His fingerprints will be there forever, I think. Very difficult decision. It was a roster crisis. The guys finally got healthy again and we have limited space.

“It was one of those things where the versatility of our roster, Mookie in right field, any conversation we could have had with anybody on our roster right now would have been extremely difficult. Unfortunately, it had to be Jason.

“I'm forever grateful and I know the guys are too. This was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.”

Heyward joined the Dodgers on a minor league contract ahead of the 2023 season. He made the Dodgers' opening-game roster and had a successful season.

The Dodgers rewarded Heyward by signing him to a one-year, $9 million contract for this season, but the 35-year-old was unable to build on last season's success and struggled with numerous injuries.

Heyward posted a batting average of .249/.322/.446 with 33 doubles, 21 home runs and 68 RBI in 187 games over parts of two seasons with the Dodgers.

Further proof of how much the Dodgers locker room valued Heyward was when he was chosen as the winner of the 18th Roy Campanella Award last season. The award is given each year to a player on the team who best embodies the spirit and leadership qualities of the late Hall of Fame catcher.

Heyward is the only Dodger rookie to receive this honor, along with Rafael Furcal (2006), Jamey Carroll (2010) and Freddie Freeman (2022).

Is Jason Heyward eligible for the postseason?

Yes, if Heyward signs with a team by September 1, he would still be eligible to play in the postseason this year.
