16-year-old charged with hitting and killing Rock Hill high school student on golf cart – WSOC TV

ROCK HILL, SC — A teen driver has been charged with hitting a golf cart last month, killing a 15-year-old girl who was sitting inside.

On July 25, police were called to Laurel Creek Drive between Twin Lakes and India Hook Road. At the scene, officers were told that six passengers were in the golf cart when it was struck by a Honda CRV near a curve.

The SUV was in the wrong lane, police said. The golf cart overturned upon impact.

One of the passengers, 15-year-old Marlie Sullivan, died at the scene of the accident. The school district confirmed that she was a 10th-grader at Rock Hill High School.

According to police, three of the drivers were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Friends, family and classmates decorated a memorial for Marlie at Rock Hill High School.

“It's tough,” said Tanner Land, a local father. “We heard they were driving a golf cart and someone came at high speed and hit them.”

Land said he has a daughter who is about Marlies' age.

York County always sticks together in difficult times, he said.

“When a tragedy happens, everyone supports and loves each other,” Land said. “There is a lot of support here.”

Land said he would use this opportunity to remind his children to always be careful.

“Just be careful what you’re doing because accidents happen,” he said.

In a news release Monday, Rock Hill police announced they had charged a 16-year-old boy with involuntary manslaughter. Investigators said he was speeding in the Honda CRV, which led to the crash.

“The speed of the vehicle at the time of the collision demonstrated a reckless disregard for the safety of others,” police said.

Due to his age, police did not disclose the identity of the 16-year-old.

No further information has been released.
