Ambush resulted in two police officers shooting a man

A man was shot multiple times by Nash County Sheriff's Office officers on Monday.

Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said officers attempted to arrest 52-year-old James Breheim after being called to a home on Reges Store Road in Nashville for a domestic dispute.

According to Stone, a woman went to the Nash County District Court to obtain an arrest warrant following a domestic violence incident. When officers arrived on scene to execute the warrant, they were threatened in what the sheriff called a “ambush-like situation.”

According to the sheriff's office, two officers shot Breheim after he came out of the back of the house armed with a handgun, confronted the officers and fired the weapon.

Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said officers attempted to arrest 52-year-old James Breheim after being called to the home regarding a domestic dispute.

Stone said the two officers, identified as Lt. David Walker and Sgt. Miguel Salazar, fired several shots at Breheim. The officers were placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

According to Stone, neither officer was physically injured in the incident. Stone spoke about the stress that police officers and their families face in such situations.

“They have to go through this for the rest of their lives,” Stone said. “Right Enforcement are under greater pressure than ever before and must react in a split second Decisions. It's life or death … very dangerous.”

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting along with the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

During a press conference on Monday, Stone said the man who shot at the officers was in stable condition at WakeMed with injuries to his upper and lower extremities.

Stone said charges will be filed against him after he is released from the hospital.

The sheriff believes mental health issues and possibly drugs or alcohol contributed to the situation that occurred on Monday.

“We go to domestic disputes every day, and that was the case this morning,” Stone said.

Stone said officials have visited the home several times and stressed that more mental health resources and facilities are needed.

“There were threats to harm themselves,” he said. “If [we] If there were places for psychiatric care, people could be helped.”

Previous reporting from WRAL News indicates Salazar fired his gun during a burglary in May. Monday's shooting marks the second time in a matter of months that Salazar has been involved in a police-involved shooting.
