Motorcyclist killed in head-on collision in St. Joseph County | WKZO | Everything Kalamazoo

STURGIS TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A 32-year-old Sturgis man was killed Monday morning when his motorcycle collided head-on with an SUV while attempting to pass two vehicles on U.S. 12 near Shimmel Road in St. Joseph County.

Michigan State Police officials at Marshall Post said the accident occurred around 7:00 a.m.

According to their preliminary investigation, the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on US 12 when he attempted to pass a car and a semi-trailer truck.

While passing the tractor-trailer, the motorcyclist collided head-on with a third vehicle, an eastbound SUV driven by a 40-year-old woman from White Pigeon.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the SUV suffered only minor injuries. According to police, she was wearing a seatbelt.

The causes of the accident are believed to be speed and improper passing, which is why US 12 had to be closed for some time to allow for processing and cleanup.

The names of those involved in the accident were not released by state police. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department and LifeCare. The accident remains under investigation.
