The Biggest Veterans (and Rookies!) Released on Cut Down Day 2024

The 2024 NFL preseason is over. That means many dreams will soon be shattered.

The three exhibition games are the last chance for mediocre players to prove they belong on the regular-season roster. But once they're over, the league mandates that teams must trim their rosters from the maximum 90 players allowed in the summer to 53 for the games that count.

That means a flood of trades between 32 teams, sending undrafted rookies and former Pro Bowlers to the open market. Some will be claimed off waivers and find a new place. Many others will end up on practice squads. But a significant number of them will see their NFL hopes dashed because the league can't find a place for them.

We have a complete breakdown of the 2024 cuts by team here. But if you're looking for a quick look at the biggest names who got their notice without having to wade through a thousand-plus layoffs, let's see if we can help you out. These are the big-name veterans (and rookies) who were let go before the NFL cut deadline.

1

EDGE Deion Jones, Buffalo Bills

Jones was a six-year starter for the Atlanta Falcons, finishing third in the 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year vote and making the Pro Bowl in 2017. He spent the last two seasons as a rotation player with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers and is now on the open market, where a team in need of linebackers could call him up this fall.

2

QB Kedon Slovis, Indianapolis Colts

BYU Cougars quarterback Kedon Slovis throws under pressure from Texas Longhorns defensive lineman Byron Murphy II during the first quarter at Royal Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023.

Slovis was a top-tier recruit who once looked like a potential first-round draft pick. Instead, he failed to regain the form that made him one of the best freshmen of 2019 before transferring to Pittsburgh and then Brigham Young to finish out his college career. He went undrafted in 2024 but signed with Indianapolis in hopes of replacing Anthony Richardson. He will likely slide to the practice squad, where he will have a chance to prove himself on the Colts' coaching staff.

Quarterback Mike White, Miami Dolphins

White had a moment with the New York Jets when he overcame the abysmal bar of Zach Wilson's quarterback performance in a small sample size. That led him to Miami, where he was envisioned as a valuable backup to Tua Tagovailoa. But a healthy Tagovailoa played all 17 games last season and head coach Mike McDaniel has opted to use Skylar Thompson as his QB2 starting in 2024.

OT Jackson Carman, Cincinnati Bengals

Carman entered the NFL as a controversial second-round pick after being accused of sexual harassment while at Clemson (he was not charged criminally). He has played just 16 snaps over the past two seasons and started just six times in his most successful season in the league.

5

EDGE Randy Gregory, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Gregory might have had something to offer the Buccaneers' weakened pass rush. We'll never know, as he never showed up for training camp and was instead released, then retired from football.

6

WR Sterling Shepard, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Shepard reunited with former Oklahoma teammate Baker Mayfield in Tampa, but the 31-year-old did not make the roster. After just 10 catches in 15 games with the New York Giants last fall, the crafty wideout may be nearing the end of his eight-year NFL career.

7

WR Donovan Peoples-Jones

Peoples-Jones seemed to be on the verge of a breakthrough in 2022 after an 839-yard season. But he fell out of the Browns' receiver rotation in 2023 and was traded to Detroit for a sixth-round pick last fall. Despite the Lions' need for wide receivers, he failed to make a lasting impression at Michigan.

8

RBs Matt Breida and Ke'Shawn Vaughn

Both Breida and Vaughn looked to regain their value in Kyle Shanahan's offense behind Christian McCaffrey, but neither managed to earn a spot on the roster from the previous season.

9

WR Russell Gage, Baltimore Ravens

Gage proved to be a serviceable WR2 with the Atlanta Falcons earlier in the decade, but a trade to the Buccaneers made him an almost exclusive short-yardage target and he missed the 2023 season due to a torn patellar tendon. He failed to integrate into the Ravens' weak rotation, but at 28, he could still establish himself elsewhere.
