Susan Smith's ex-husband David vows to fight her parole bid

Susan Smith is in prison for the murder of her two young sons in 1994. She is due to be released on parole in early November. However, if her ex-husband had anything to do with it, she will remain in prison.

The killer's mother has contacted her ex, David Smith, and asked him not to oppose her attempt to get out of prison, but a family member told The Post that Smith would “100% oppose” her release from prison.

“He has every right to stand in her way and that's exactly what he's going to do now,” Smith's relative said. “She killed his children and caused him a lifetime of pain. If she thinks he's just going to stand by and do nothing while she tries to get out of prison, she's even more delusional than we thought.”

According to a spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Parole and Pardons, parole seekers can file a notice that they are seeking early release. At that point, the state will notify the victim's family — and they have a right to have a say in the decision.

David Smith lost three-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander when his then wife Susan drove them into a lake while they were strapped into their car seats in 1994.

She has been incarcerated at the Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina, for more than two decades following the infamous murder of her two sons.

She is due to be released on parole later this year and has told her family that she believes she deserves to be released.

After watching her sons slowly drown in Union County's John D. Long Lake, Smith falsely told police that a black man had stolen her car and kidnapped the boys, sparking a manhunt that involved officers going door-to-door in predominantly African-American neighborhoods.

Smith and her then-husband David appeared on national news every day, pleading for the boys' safe return – and sticking to the story that their car had been stolen.

But nine days later, Smith finally confessed that she had made up the whole story and drowned her sons in the lake.

Her alleged motive: She was having an affair with a rich man who didn't want children. The car was pulled out of the water with the two boys still strapped into their seats.

She was found guilty of murder but spared the death penalty; she was instead sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 30 years.

Smith's first parole hearing under her life sentence is scheduled for November 4. The parole board will consider David Smith's views in deciding whether to release her.

But Smith has no ally in her ex-husband.

“It's just ridiculous that she's even asking for David's support,” the family member says. “So the answer is no. No, no, no. Just no.”
