'Crazy cop' who was fired after a video of her angry outburst was shared online has got her job back despite serious concerns

A police officer whose conduct made headlines last year and who was ultimately fired has been reinstated.

In May 2023, Bethany Guerriero responded to a citizen's 911 call claiming that a man had pulled a gun on her following an altercation in Florida.

Ryan Gould was the one who called the police in the hope that they would “intervene and ensure his safety,” but things took an unexpected turn.

Although Gould called the police, Guerriero ended up pointing her gun at him. She later stated that she did this because she was unsure whether or not he was the reported shooter.

She also reportedly believed that Gould, who was wearing only swim trunks and Crocs at the time, hid the gun in his shorts.

Guerriero reportedly held Gould at gunpoint for 12 seconds before handcuffing him.

Filmed at the time of the ordeal last year, Guerriero can be heard telling Gould to “shut up” and calling him a “punk” when asked why he was arrested.

Gould was taken to prison on the day in question but was released before his case could be processed.

Video of their interaction was viewed 10 million times online, prompting Palm Beach Gardens police to fire Guerriero.

She was dubbed a “crazy cop” on social media. The video posted on YouTube was captioned “Innocent man arrested by crazy cop.”

The police department defended its decision to fire her, saying Guerriero had committed “an absolute abuse of power in every possible way.”

But Guerriero got her job back this month after “a union-forced arbitration and the arbitrator’s binding decision to return her to work without back pay,” NBC News reports.

A city and police spokesman said she is currently undergoing retraining and will be assigned to the documentation department.

Although Guerriero got her job back, she still faces a federal lawsuit filed by Gould accusing her of excessive force and false arrest.

The trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 9 in a West Palm Beach courtroom, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Following the city's recent decision to reinstate Guerriero, Gould's attorney, Eric Rice, said he was “disappointed that the police failed to recognize the significant trauma Ryan suffered.”

He continued: “He sought protection when threatened with a firearm and instead of being held at the safety of officers, he was held at gunpoint. We have seen no measures in place to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.”

The Palm Beach Gardens Police Chief was contacted for comment.
