Trey Ridgeway of Ankeny and Jayden Hughes of Clear Lake killed

Authorities have determined the identities of two people killed in a traffic crash in Polk County northeast of Polk City on Friday. Just before 2 p.m., two vehicles collided at the intersection of NW 44th Street and NW 126th Avenue, according to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Previous coverage in the video above: Two people killed in Polk County traffic crash near Polk City “Officers arrived on the scene to find two vehicles involved in the crash,” the news release said. “One vehicle was in the southeast ditch of the intersection, the other was east of the intersection on the south side of the roadway and in a tree line. The vehicle in the tree line was fully engulfed in flames.” Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle that came to a stop in the tree line was traveling eastbound on NW 126th Ave. and collided with the other vehicle, which was traveling southbound on NW 44th St.” Two occupants of the eastbound vehicle died at the scene. They were identified as Trey Ridgeway, 25, of Ankeny, and Jayden Hughes, 23, of Clear Lake. According to the latest data from the Iowa Department of Transportation, 204 people have died on Iowa's roadways so far this year. That's 41 fewer than the number expected at the same time in 2023. Over the past five years, an average of 350 people were killed in crashes statewide each year.

Authorities have identified two people who died in an accident in Polk County northeast of Polk City on Friday

According to a press release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, two vehicles collided at the intersection of NW 44th Street and NW 126th Avenue shortly before 2 p.m.

“Officers arrived at the scene and found two vehicles involved in the accident,” the press release said. “One vehicle was in the southeast ditch of the intersection, the other was east of the intersection on the south side of the roadway and in a line of trees. The vehicle in the line of trees was fully engulfed in flames.”

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle that came to rest in the tree line was traveling eastbound on NW 126th Avenue and collided with the other vehicle, which was traveling southbound on NW 44th Street.”

Two occupants of the eastbound vehicle died at the scene. They were identified as Trey Ridgeway, 25, of Ankeny, and Jayden Hughes, 23, of Clear Lake.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
