The man arrested on Monday after a chase was already wanted in a previous case, according to police

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – A man booked into the Shawnee County Jail after a chase that ended in south Topeka on Monday was wanted in connection with another case earlier this summer, police said.

The man, Jose Luis Escalante, 29, was being held without bail in the Shawnee County Jail on Tuesday after the chase began early Monday south of downtown Topeka, headed south of the capital city and then back south of the city limits, where it ended with the chase car catching fire, officials said.

Escalante was being held in the Shawnee County Jail on Tuesday in connection with several felony charges, jail officials said.

In one of the cases for which Escalante was detained, Topeka police officers responded to the 2100 block of SW Van Buren Street on July 25 for a domestic dispute, officials said.

It was reported that a man named Escalante had threatened a person he knew and had a weapon on him, Topeka police spokeswoman Rosie Nichols said.

It was also reported that Escalante had previously struck the victim with a weapon, Nichols said.

Upon arriving in the 2100 block of SW Van Buren on July 25, Nichols said, police officers witnessed Escalante fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

Escalante was not immediately found, Nichols said.

A tracking attempt was made and Escalante was arrested early Monday after he was detained following the chase that ended in South Topeka.

Officials said the offenses for which Escalante was jailed Monday, dating back to the July 25 incident, included aggravated assault, domestic violence, aggravated weapons offense by a felon, aggravated assault, aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim, and fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

Authorities said Escalante was also booked into the Shawnee County Jail on numerous offenses related to Monday's chase, which began around 2:15 a.m. when Topeka police officers observed a passenger vehicle run a red light near 21st and South Kansas Avenue.

Officers quickly determined that the driver had a felony warrant and attempted to stop the car near SE 21st and Lakewood. The location was east of 21st and S. Kansas Avenue.

The man behind the wheel stopped a few blocks east, near the intersection of SE 21st and Adams, officials said, but the man then drove south on Adams at a high rate of speed and began a pursuit.

The driver began driving erratically, crossing into both lanes and ignoring traffic control systems, officials said.

Near SE 53rd and Adams, the driver left the road and officers discontinued the pursuit.

Authorities said the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office became aware of the chase, which began in the Topeka metropolitan area, and immediately responded to the area to assist.

At around 2:20 a.m. Monday, a Shawnee County Sheriff's deputy saw the pursued vehicle driving through Forbes Field Air National Guard Base near SW 53rd and Topeka Boulevard.

Officials said Tuesday that the vehicle broke through “multiple fences” as it passed through the Kansas Air National Guard base at Forbes Field, south of Topeka.

The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, officials said. However, the vehicle was unable to stop and began another chase that headed north onto SW Topeka Boulevard.

Officials said the pursuit ended in the 2800 block of South Kansas Avenue, where the driver was taken into custody.

The Topeka Fire Department was on scene when the pursued vehicle caught fire at the end of the pursuit.

Shawnee County Sheriff's officials said the vehicle that caught fire did not crash. Instead, it began to smoke and then caught fire.

Authorities said Escalante, who was driving the vehicle, was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Escalante was then booked into the Shawnee County Jail at 12:10 a.m. Monday. He was charged with offenses related to the chase, including aggravated kidnapping, fleeing or attempting to elude, obstructing a police officer, trespassing, criminal damage to property, multiple traffic violations, no liability insurance, registration violation, driving without lights when required and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.

A passenger in the vehicle driven by Escalante was treated by medical personnel at the scene where the pursuit ended, officials said. There were no reports that person was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Officials said the sheriff's office has completed paperwork related to the case and will forward it to the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office for review.
