2 women from Arizona found shot dead on highway in Mexico

LUKEVILLE, AZ (AZFamily) — An investigation is underway after two elderly women from Arizona were found shot to death on a highway in the Mexican state of Sonora last week.

According to a post by the Attorney General's Office of the State of Sonora on X (formerly Twitter), the bodies of two women, aged 72 and 82, were found in an overturned Nissan Pathfinder on the Sonoyta-Caborca Highway last Friday morning, August 23. The SUV had been damaged by gunfire.

According to investigators, the women were en route from Arizona to the town of Caborca in the state of Sonora, where they were originally from, when they were attacked by armed suspects.

Mexican police officials have since recovered a stolen Ford F-150 that they believe was used in the attack. The truck was found abandoned in the Sonora town of Quitovac, about 30 miles south of Lukeville, near the Arizona-Mexico border.

In addition, four AK-47 rifles, three bulletproof vests and dozens of rounds of ammunition were confiscated. However, no arrests were made.

No motive for the attack was given, nor any possible connection to cartel violence in the region.

It is unclear where in Arizona they lived, but a State Department spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that one of the women was a U.S. citizen and the other was a lawful permanent resident of the country.
