Inmate stabbed to death in Fulton County Jail

Deputies said the inmate was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

ATLANTA – An inmate was stabbed to death at the Fulton County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

The stabbing triggered a massive police operation at the Rice Street Jail on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies said the inmate was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The inmate's identity has not yet been released.

What led to this incident is currently unclear.

The stabbing came less than a week after a Georgia Senate subcommittee released the results of a lengthy investigation into prison conditions at the jail. The probe was launched last year after a series of deaths at the Fulton County Jail.

The most recent violent incident at the prison occurred in April, when 37-year-old Leonard Fortner died after an inmate stabbed him multiple times.
