Canton City Councilman says he was disturbed when he saw a video of a police officer kicking a suspect

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Tensions continue to rise between the community and the Canton Police Department after a video viewed thousands of times shows a Canton Police officer running toward and kicking a suspect while he was kneeling on the ground.

Councillor Jonathan Cooks said watching the video left him disturbed.

The video was recorded on August 24, when police were called to Morris Avenue for a large altercation between 10 and 15 people.

Many people in the community are angry about this officer's actions.

They showed up at the city council meeting on Monday evening to express their concerns.

“Last night's meeting was really very trying. You can feel in the tone and the voice, the projections of the voice, how hurt some family members and other members are,” said Councillor Cooks.

Councilman Cooks says what is seen in the video is not appropriate action for a police officer.

He says the hardest part about this incident is waiting and letting the process play out.

“We have to wait for due process. I am willing to do that so that justice can be done,” said Councilman Cooks.

Mayor William Sherer issued a statement saying, “I have said more than once that we can do better, and I am tired of saying it over and over again. It's about action. This behavior is not acceptable.”

Safety Director Andrea Perry also issued a statement: “When incidents like this occur, I have protocols to follow. In regards to this process, I also understand that our community wants answers, but I have to follow the guidelines of our collective bargaining agreement.”

“I have complete confidence in our mayor, our legal department and also our public safety department to ensure that due process is followed,” said Councilman Cooks.

Jaemiir McElroy, the suspect who was kicked by the police officer, appeared in court Tuesday morning.

He pleaded not guilty to resisting arrest and obstruction of justice.
