2 parks in Denver closed due to drug use, violence and vandalism

Denver Parks and Recreation has closed La Alma-Lincoln Park, parts of Sonny Lawson Park and the green space along 14th Avenue.

DENVER – Denver Parks and Recreation confirmed Tuesday that some areas will be temporarily cordoned off due to an increase in drug trafficking, violent incidents and vandalism.

The department said closures of La Alma-Lincoln Park, parts of Sonny Lawson Park and a green space along 14th Avenue would remain in effect for at least 30 days.

The ministry said it had attempted intervention measures before deciding to close the areas, but problems persisted.

Access to the playground and dog park at Sonny Lawson Park will remain open, and currently approved events will be permitted to use the park on the days of their permits. Approved events include league baseball games, farmers markets and concerts. The department said it has reached out to permit holders to inform them of the closure and will work with them if they wish to modify their permit.

Denver park rangers will contact you to enforce park rules and regulations when it is safe and appropriate to do so and will issue tickets when necessary, the agency said.

Parks and Recreation said it is coordinating closure efforts with the Denver City Council, Denver Department of Transportation, Denver Department of Health and Environment, Denver Police Department and the Dream Center.

The agency said it has closed parks before to prevent illegal and dangerous behavior, including Civic Center Park, which has been closed several times over the past decade.

The department said the recent closure of Civic Center Park from 2021 to 2023 helped ensure the safety of the park after the area fully reopens.

“As you walk through the park today, you can witness firsthand how successful this closure and reopening has been,” the department said. “The park is in amazing shape and welcomes all who wish to visit this public space.”
